Hippopotamus movements structure the spatiotemporal dynamics of an active anthrax outbreak

چکیده

Globally, anthrax outbreaks pose a serious threat to people, livestock, and wildlife. Furthermore, environmental change can exacerbate these outbreak dynamics by altering the host–pathogen relationship. However, little is known about how quantitative spatial of host movement may affect spread Bacillus anthracis, causative agent anthrax. Here, we use real-time observations high-resolution tracking data from population common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) in Tanzania explore relationship between river hydrology, H. amphibius movement, spatiotemporal an active outbreak. We found that extreme drying, consequence anthropogenic disturbances our study river, indirectly facilitated B. anthracis modulating movements. Our findings reveal upstream Great Ruaha River (~3.5 km over 9-day period), which followed patterns infected amphibius, who moved as dried search remaining aquatic refugia. These movements result large aggregations amphibius. despite aggregations, density pools did not influence number anthracis-induced mortalities. Moreover, infection appear behaviors, suggests individuals vector distances right up until their death. Finally, show contact rates amphibius- anthracis-infected are highly variable frequency duration contacts could potentially increase probability mortality. While difficult obtain, insights gathered during critical better understand, predict, manage future outbreaks.

An outbreak of anthrax meningoencephalitis.

We report a common-source outbreak of anthrax meningoencephalitis in Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh, southern India, in October 1990. The source of infection was the carcass of a sheep. Of 5 persons who skinned and cut up its meat for human consumption, 4 developed anthrax meningoencephalitis and one a malignant pustule. Another person who wrapped the meat in a cloth and carried it home on...

Evaluating Detection of an Inhalational Anthrax Outbreak

Timely detection of an inhalational anthrax outbreak is critical for clinical and public health management. Syndromic surveillance has received considerable investment, but little is known about how it will perform relative to routine clinical case finding for detection of an inhalational anthrax outbreak. We conducted a simulation study to compare clinical case finding with syndromic surveilla...

Eye movements modulate the spatiotemporal dynamics of word processing.

Active reading requires coordination between frequent eye movements (saccades) and short fixations in text. Yet, the impact of saccades on word processing remains unknown, as neuroimaging studies typically employ constant eye fixation. Here we investigate eye-movement effects on word recognition processes in healthy human subjects using anatomically constrained magnetoencephalography, psychophy...

Eye Movements Reveal the Spatiotemporal Dynamics Oe Visual Search

Given that attention precedes an eye movement to a target It becomes possible to use fixation sequences to probe the spatiotemporal dynamics of search Applying this method to a realistic search task, we found eye movements directed to the geometric centers of progressively smaller groups of objects rather than accurate fixations to individual objects in a display Such a binary search strategy i...
